I approach teaching like a careful craft, treating every session as extremely essential to a student's learning curve. I believe a session produces valuable results when a student can prove their understanding of the material they have just learned. For example, if they can correctly answer 5 questions of varying difficulty right after consuming the information, then that session has proved to return results.
Sumayia is a Hunter College computer science graduate and Daedalus Honors Scholar, now pursuing her M.S. in Data Science at the CUNY Graduate Center. A lifelong New Yorker, she meets each student where they are and builds their confidence step by step with patience and empathy. She tutors K-8 Math.
As a Teaching Assistant for Introduction to Computer Science at Hunter College, I worked one-on-one with a student who struggled with understanding a topic from lecture. I realized she needed individual assistance, so I walked her through the topic in small steps. She began returning to tutoring regularly and improved her performance as a student. She has since gone on to complete a summer at Microsoft's Data Summer Institute.
