My teaching philosophy centers on making technical concepts concrete through a progression from intuition to implementation to independent problem-solving. I break complex topics into smaller components, use examples that connect theory to real systems, and regularly check understanding through targeted questions and practice rather than relying on passive explanation. As a tutor in high school at a company called Knodemy, I taught computer science for very young kids (ages 8-15), where breaking down the concepts of coding was essential. At university, having taught, tutored, or led discussions across 15 courses and currently serving in teaching roles in machine learning and computational genomics, I adapt my explanations to each student's starting point while gradually increasing the level of challenge. My goal is for students to leave not only knowing how to solve a problem, but understanding why the solution works and how to apply the underlying ideas in a new context.
Shruti Bhamidipati is a computer science and AI educator and engineer currently pursuing an M.S. in Computer Science at Columbia University. With experience teaching, tutoring, and leading discussions across 17 university level courses, she specializes in helping students build strong foundations in programming, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and computational problem-solving. Her professional and research experience spans software engineering at ServiceNow, machine learning systems, agentic AI, and full-stack development, allowing her to connect academic concepts to real-world technical applications. Shruti is passionate about making challenging technical material approachable, practical, and intellectually engaging.
As a private tutor, I worked with an 11th-grade student taking Algebra II who was struggling with the course because she lacked foundational skills with fractions. Rather than immediately focusing on her Algebra II assignments, I identified the underlying gap and worked with her systematically on fraction operations. I then helped her connect those foundational skills to the more advanced problems she was encountering in class, so she could understand not just what steps to follow, but why they worked. By rebuilding her confidence in the fundamentals, I helped her become more comfortable and independent when tackling her Algebra II coursework.
