I start by identifying where a student is getting stuck and then break the material into smaller, manageable steps. I use a combination of explanation, guided practice, and having the student teach the concept back to me so I can identify gaps in understanding. I adapt my language and pacing to each student while gradually reducing support as they become more confident.
Selin is an NYU Applied Psychology graduate with experience tutoring Biology, AP Psychology, English, writing, and general academic skills. She has several years of experience working with children through private tutoring, developmental psychology research, and childcare. Her approach focuses on adapting lessons to each student's learning style while building confidence and independent study skills.
Currently tutor a high school student weekly in Biology and AP Psychology. Early on, I noticed that memorizing definitions was not translating into an ability to explain or apply the concepts, so I shifted our sessions toward active recall, practice questions, and having the student explain concepts back to me in their own words. Over time, the student became noticeably more independent in working through unfamiliar questions and needed fewer prompts from me to reach the correct answer.
