My approach centers on diagnosing the specific weakness in a student's work rather than offering general encouragement. With essay prep, I focus on first emphasizing something specific and personal to write about, since vague framing is usually the root cause of a forgettable draft. Then, I push students through multiple structured rewrite rounds focused on strengthening the voice of the student. For history and political science, I emphasize argument construction: identifying the thesis, testing it against counter evidence, and revising for clarity before worrying about the prose style. I make sure each session ends with a specific, actionable next step rather than general feedback.
Sam is a Fordham University political science student and writer with experience tutoring in essay preparation and history/social studies coursework. He has helped prospective college students and he brings a background in published writing and research as a staff writer for Fordham's Law Review, Political Review, and student newspaper.
I worked with a prospective Fordham student on their college application essay through a word-of-mouth connection I made through the Lincoln Center Society. The student's draft started out generic and impersonal, but I worked with them to make their essay personal and exciting, featuring a distinct voice and a layered, interesting person behind the essay. They were admitted into Fordham last year.
