My teaching philosophy is that a student should leave a tutoring session feeling more capable, not more dependent on the tutor. I once worked with a student who would immediately say “I don’t know” when they saw a difficult math problem, even before attempting it. Instead of taking over, I started asking them to tell me just one thing they recognized in the problem, and we built from there. Over time, they became more willing to attempt problems before asking for help. To me, that shift from needing someone to lead them through every question to trusting their own reasoning is what makes tutoring successful.
Prionty is a Macaulay Honors Scholar and Mathematics student at Queens College with experience tutoring K–12 students in math and English. She specializes in helping students strengthen their math foundations and build confidence through individualized instruction tailored to each student’s learning style and interests.
I tutored a seventh-grade student who was especially disengaged from math and often told me she was scared of it because she would forget how to solve problems soon after learning them. After working with her for a few days, I realized she was trying to memorize each type of problem instead of understanding why the steps worked. Since she loved drawing and K-pop, I started building explanations around things she actually enjoyed, such as using K-pop idols as characters in word problems, and created a reward system where scoring above 85% on the practice tests I gave her earned her new markers or art supplies. Gradually, math became something she was excited to practice rather than something she avoided, and she began scoring above my 85% target on assessments. More importantly, she became comfortable working through problems instead of relying only on memorized steps.
