As someone who used tutoring services before, I know and understand exactly what students want when they ask for tutoring services. I start by identifying specifically where the student is struggling rather than reteaching the entire topic. I start by going over necessary background information needed to understand a certain topic before I start teaching so the student can understand efficiently. I then use targeted practice problems to further help the student grasp the material. I tell them how to do one problem and give them more practice questions which they would do. I adjust the difficulty and teaching method based on their responses and revisit weak areas until they can complete problems without prompting. I believe a successful session is one where the student leaves able to apply the material independently, not just understand my explanation while I am sitting beside them.

I have worked as a tutor for 3 years in various different institutions. I worked with K-8 students and worked for SHSAT test prep. I teach the students the material in depth and then make sure they practice by themselves afterwards. I also encourage students the chance to try themselves before asking a question.

I recently worked with a 4th grade student who was new to this country. Their previous reading and math level was below the standard of the average NYC student. Their goal was to get a grade point of 4 in their common core exams this year (they got a 2 on both subjects in 3rd grade). I started by teaching them math topics and went in depth while explaining, then made them practice various math questions and gave them more practice for homework. For English I taught them new words, had them practice reading, and trained them how to solve multiple choice questions and critical thinking. The student got a 4 out of 4 on both of their common core subjects this year.
