Before each of my tutoring sessions, I make sure to understand what the student has been working on in the week prior. I look at past homework, classwork, and tests and build a lesson plan from that. To start each session, I ask the student what they feel they need to work on so they have some autonomy in their learning, and I make sure to be flexible in what we do so they get the most out of each session.
Meredith is a senior undergraduate Psychology student in the accelerated master's program for childhood education at Fordham University. She has been working with students for the past 4 years in literacy intervention, math, reading, and writing.
My student showed great potential in math, and it showed itself during specific lessons such as multiplying a single-digit number by a double-digit number. As we moved onto division, it appeared as though she was starting to struggle with remembering her multiplication facts. Her school test results showed this, too. Upon conquering 2-digit x 1-digit problems, she seemed to trip up on the simpler ones. Together, we went back and covered the fundamentals of multiplication and division. Taking our time and focusing on repetition and learning new strategies that helped her succeed.
