Tutoring is a way to augment a student's learning and studies, an opportunity provide a patient space for students to clear misconceptions and sharpen a mathematical concept in their minds. The point is to really help the student understand the math question and potentially different ways to get to an answer. It is the quality of how a student can approach and solve a math problem versus the quantity or amount of problems the student can solve in a tutoring session.
Karen is a Teachers College at Columbia University graduate with 3–5 years of experience teaching math and SHSAT preparation. Her approach centers on conceptual understanding over rote memorization — giving students the space to reason through a problem themselves before stepping in, so they walk away with lasting confidence rather than a memorized shortcut.
One student I taught in my 10th grade Geometry class had below average math fundamentals. I discovered that he was having a hard time solving a basic algebraic equation 2x=16. I suspected he did not know what it really meant to solve an equation. Knowing basic algebra is a prerequisite for 10th grade, but I gave him the space to figure it out, instead of giving him the answer. I asked him, what times 2 gives 16? Or what is 16 divided by 2? This rephrasing of the algebraic equation helped, and he was able to procure the answer to be 8. This experience showed the student more confidence that his teacher is there to help him.
