The principles that will allow students to tackle higher math must be established early during middle school and through high school with positive reinforcement, so students do not fall behind and begin dreading math and jobs requiring math as they grow older. Teaching students how to understand math as it relates to applications in the real world is crucial; it makes the numbers not simply abstract concepts but relatable entities. Therefore, when I tutor, I give some rudimentary problems with simple number crunching, but the brunt of my problem sets consists of word problems to which students can relate.
John is a Princeton University graduate with 10+ years of experience teaching math and science, specializing in comprehensive test preparation across the SAT, ACT, and SHSAT. His approach grounds abstract math in real-world applications, helping students see numbers as relatable rather than purely abstract — a method reflected in his long track record of student success.
For the past six years, since before the pandemic, I have worked with a Manhattan family whose two sons attended an independent school. I started with the older son in 8th grade, when he was struggling in math. First, I made sure he could factor quadratics correctly, a skill he had never been taught thoroughly. From there, he moved on to completing the square and graphing quadratics with confidence. He never scored below an A- on a high school math test again, and he is now a college junior at an Ivy League university with a 4.0 GPA.
