I approach tutoring systematically. For instance, if I am teaching calculus, I identify every type of question a student needs to master. Whether the topic is logarithms or integration, each has its own unique subset of problem types. Ultimately, a subject is made up of these distinct subtopics. My strategy focuses on mastering each specific subset of problems and using active recall to consistently memorize them, all while prioritizing the high yield questions most likely to appear on exams. The difference between a session that produces results and one that doesn't is coming into each session with a goal, of some level of understanding. What objectives are necessary to make progress towards completion of this subjection?.
Jariel is an undergraduate at Baruch College specializing in AP Calculus and AP English instruction. Having recently conquered these rigorous exams himself, he brings a relatable, near-peer perspective to his tutoring sessions. He focuses on shifting students away from rote memorization toward deep conceptual understanding, helping them confidently boost their grades and master AP material.
I recently worked with a high school peer who was struggling with AP Calculus AB, specifically grasping the applications of integration, and was holding a low C in the class. I identified that they were trying to note memorize formulas rather than understanding the underlying geometric concepts of area and volume. I shifted our focus entirely to visual representation, spending our sessions breaking down the disk and washer methods by drawing the bounds. I created custom problem sets that only required setting up the integrals, not solving them, to target their specific bottleneck. By shifting their approach from memorization to conceptual setup, their next unit test score jumped 20 points, and they ultimately passed the AP exam.
