I approach tutoring by first getting to know my students on a personal level, their interests, their goals, and what kind of person they are. Next, we talk about their academic history, their strengths and weaknesses, and their goals. Then, I build a personalized lesson plan to bridge conceptual gaps, and help them relate to problems by drawing connections to material they're more comfortable with or interested in. I always lead with personal connection and mutual respect, and I try to incorporate at least a little fun into each lesson!
Jack is a graduate student in Medical Physics in Columbia Engineering with a broad foundation in the sciences and humanities, aiding his interdisciplinary tutoring approach. He loves film photography and birdwatching, and is very patient, polite, and enthusiastic to work with a wide range of students on just about any topic.
Last year, I worked with an older adult that had decided to go back to school and finish the bachelor's degree she had started but not finished 3 decades prior. She told me from our first interaction that she was not, and never was, a 'math person,' and that her biggest barrier ahead was the algebra class she needed to take. I worked with her for a long time, slowly at first, building a steady foundation in arithmetic using examples from her own life. She was able to see math not as some scary and cryptic language, but a muscle she already flexed every day. She achieved an A in algebra, and went on to acquire her real estate license and kickstart a new career.
