In the first few sessions, I usually start off by trying to establish trust between the student and me. I will make sure they won't be punished if they get something wrong or forget to do the homework I assigned them. I will also provide them a custom platform built by myself that will help track their work and learning progress with me. This will likely be in the form of a web app where I assign work, and they will be able to do work there. Then, as we cover more materials through slides, activities, etc. I will give out occasional quizzes or tests that are just to test them on their own knowledge, and will give them analysis on which part to practice more on. Afterwards, we will go over the test after it is scored. At the end of our entire journey, I will give them a cumulative test that tests their overall knowledge and make sure they have actually learned whatever they signed up for, including giving them access to all my slides and notes.
I am a Macaulay Honors Scholar at Baruch College who recently just graduated from Stuyvesant High School! I am currently majoring in Statistics and Quantitative Modeling, and I specialize in teaching K-8 Math and the SHSAT.
I remember this student Tyson, who was an 8th-grade student trying to study for the SHSAT. Through my diagnostic test with him, I learned that his English had no problem, so all we had to do was bring up his Math. He struggled a lot with algebraic word problems, which is what we worked on for the first few weeks. I realized that he wasn't exactly struggling with the algebra, but more about understanding what the question had asked for. So, to help me, we dissected example questions into bits he would understand, which he was able to eventually translate into algebraic equations himself. I did send him an email after our tutoring session came to an end, and after he took the SHSAT, he told me he wanted to get into Bronx Science but fell short. He did get into Brooklyn Tech, however, and ultimately decided to go there.
