I believe getting to know your students is one of the most important things as a tutor. You know what distracts them, motivates them, dejects them. Once you know these things, you can easily create a plan to help the student succeed in their academic journey. I approach tutoring as a fun way to learn. I specialize in working with younger students and have learned that they learn best through games, visual representation, and repetition. I use counting cubes, educational math, ELA/Writing, and reading comprehension games to help the student learn. I always set aside time in each session to review with my student what we covered last session and what they learned in school to make sure everyone is on the same page.
Hello, I’m Desiree Fuller, and I have been a tutor for 6 years now. I’m a junior in college and specialize in Foundational Academics with ages 3-10. I have extensive tutoring and work experience with these ages, and I am well versed in behavioral and academic management. I am committed to meeting students where they are and working with them on their terms so they can be successful in their academic journey.
I also volunteered at a community college tutoring program, where I worked with children struggling academically whose parents faced language barriers. I was assigned an elementary school-age child who said he liked school but couldn’t understand what the teacher was teaching. We met 2-3 times a week. I always started our sessions by talking about his day, then we’d review what he learned in class, and I’d check whether what we reviewed in our previous session had helped or if he was still confused. For the first few sessions, while I was still learning how he learned, he was often confused, but once I understood he liked games and toys, I incorporated them into my tutoring and he started understanding more. After just two months, I saw real progress in his confidence and language skills. His mother also shared that his teacher reported he was participating more in class and was more social with his peers, even helping them with problems they didn’t understand.
