Students improve fastest when they feel respected, understood, and responsible for the work. My job is not only to explain an answer, but to help the student recognize how they learn, build a repeatable process, and become less dependent on me over time. I make difficult material concrete, connect it to the student's interests, and combine encouragement with specific standards. A successful session leaves the student with clearer thinking, greater confidence, and a next action they can carry out.
Ben Edelman is an Honors graduate of Carnegie Mellon University and a professional tutor, academic coach, actor, director, and producer. He has spent more than a decade working with 100+ students from middle school through graduate school. His specialties include writing and composition, English and humanities, SAT/ACT and college-essay preparation, and study skills. Ben's approach is diagnostic, patient, structured, and highly individualized: he identifies the underlying obstacle, explains concepts in multiple ways, and gives students practical tools they can use independently. His professional storytelling and interviewing work also helps students find their own voice, organize ideas, and communicate with clarity and confidence.
I recently began weekly writing work with a seventh-grade student who has ADHD and was accustomed to resisting academic support. In the first session, I used short structured tasks, interest-based prompts, and frequent opportunities for him to make choices and explain his thinking. He stayed engaged through the hour. His parent wrote afterward that he usually complains after this kind of session, but this time he did not complain and said he enjoyed it.
